Dog-Friendly Crafty Tips and Tricks for Pawsome Savings
Being a loving dog parent is incredibly rewarding, but it can also come with its share of expenses. From toys to treats and grooming to medications, the costs can add up. However, there are creative and cost-effective ways to keep your furry friend entertained, healthy, and happy without breaking the bank. Here are some money-saving tips for dog parents that won’t compromise on quality or care.

Build Your Own Toys:
Dogs don’t discern between a fancy £50 toy from an online store and a DIY creation; let’s be honest, we often buy toys because they look appealing to us. But a simple toilet paper roll can be just as entertaining – pop a treat inside, twist the ends, and watch your pooch have a blast trying to retrieve it. The same goes for egg boxes or any spare cardboard lying around (I used lightbulb boxes a lot before LED lightbulbs became common). You can even use a plastic bottle, although it might be a tad noisy – but hey, that’s part of the fun for them, if not for us.
Bake Your Own Treats:
Crafting dog treats at home is not only cost-effective but also ensures your pup gets wholesome, tasty snacks. With just a few ingredients and a simple recipe, you can whip up delicious homemade treats. Remember, moderation is key, and these homemade goodies should complement a balanced diet.
Recipe:
2 cups flour
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
2 eggs
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, peanut butter, and eggs until slightly combined.
- Add water gradually (approximately one tablespoon at a time) until the mixture becomes wet enough to roll out as dough.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out your favorite shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place the treats on a baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes. If you prefer a little crunch, take them out once the bottoms start to darken.
Allow the treats to cool completely before letting your dog enjoy them!
Storage: these treats can be kept in an airtight container in the pantry for up to a week or stored in the freezer for a longer shelf life.

Groom Groom Groom:
We’re all aware that visits to the groomers are essential, but they can come at a hefty price. To steer clear of additional charges due to matting or extended brushing sessions, prioritise maintaining your dog’s coat in a tidy, knot-free state. Keeping your dog’s fur untangled and well-maintained reduces the time and effort required during professional grooming sessions. Not only will your dog be more comfortable, but your wallet will thank you too!

Get Your Medications Online:
Purchasing pet medications online can significantly reduce costs compared to buying from a vet. Even Lola, co-founder of WagIt, benefits from this cost-saving approach. She gets all her heart medication on www.petsdrugonline.com and has saved up to £200 in the last year. Ensure you consult your vet, who will also be able to provide you with a prescription if required. when exploring these cost-effective options.

Ask a Friend:
If you need to leave your dog at home due to work or a medical appointment, consider reaching out to a friend to dog-sit for a few hours instead of opting for a costly dog sitter. If you don’t have friends who are fond of dogs nearby, why not ask someone you frequently encounter at the park during your dog walks? After all, you see them every day, they also have a dog, and they’re local – a perfect choice for your furry friend’s care

Find a dog-friendly career:
You can make some cash for yourself by exploring dog-friendly careers. This way, you can pursue your passion for your furry friends while also earning some extra money. Love reading your posts. I can add another couple of tips that I have found especially helpful when bringing up an aggressive chewer!
1. Make your own dog mats. Any old t-shirts, clothes, curtains, can be cut into squares and stitched into patchwork rugs. If you don’t/can’t sew then cut into strips and plait together – minimum amount of stitching required
2. If, like my dog Potter, yours chews beds and blankets – simply save your old bed/blanket fabric to use as patches for the new one. It will get chewed but this will prolong the life and save money! And, if the repairs bothers you, buy the same colour every time, the repairs are less visible.
