Founded in 1896 by Georges Gaudin under the name Le Bienvenue, it moved in 1927 to 48 Greek Street. That’s when it was renamed L’Escargot Bienvenue, inspired by its signature dish – escargots (snails) – and even had a snail farm in the basement!

The building itself is a Georgian townhouse from 1741, formerly the home of the Duke of Portland, anchoring L’Escargot in almost 300 years of Soho history

Georges had a French bulldog (Claude) who used to accompany him to the restaurant every day. The current proprietors have two English bulldogs, Gladys and Daisy, who come to the restaurant most days and help in the office with the filing.
